Economic base: Irrigated fruit farming (mango, grape, banana, guava, coconut and acerola etc.) and agriculture (fine wines from the Lagoa Grande, Santa Maria da Boa Vista, and Pertolina municipalities).
Unique Characteristics: The São Francisco Valley, mainly the cities of Petrolina (PE) and Juazeiro (BA), is home to the biggest cluster of fruit exporters in Brazil, responsible for 90% of external sales. It is also the largest grape producer (the second largest wine producer with seven winemakers in production). The region has been the target of large scale projects which generate alternatives for transporting production, raw materials and goods, such as the São Francisco Waterway and the Trans-northeastern Railway.
