Education
Offering all levels of education, there are currently 4,751 establishments employing 44,500 professionals. The growth of degree, masters and doctorate courses constitutes an essential factor for development. There are currently five universities in the State (Federal University of Pernambuco, Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, São Francisco Valley University, Pernambuco State University and Catholic University) and diverse faculties, totaling 105 Institutions of Higher Education (IES) authorized to function (Source: Ministry of Education, 2009).

Further Education
Further education can be undertaken at five universities, which maintain cooperation accords with foreign educational institutes, at undergraduate, post graduate, masters, and doctorate levels. These are: Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), University of Pernambuco (UPE), Federal University of the Sao Francisco Valley (UNIVASF), all of which are public institutions, and the Catholic University of Pernambuco (Unicap), which is private.
In addition to its universities, Pernambuco has private faculties, adding up to a total of 105 Further Education Institutions (IES), with 582 full time degree courses, of which 298 are in the capital Recife and 284 throughout the state. There are 3,000, PhDs and Masters making the capital the 11th city in the country in numbers of professionals with these titles.
Research Institutes, Technology Centers and Centers of Innovation
Agricultural Institute of Pernambuco (IPA):
Founded in 1935, the IPA is tied to the Agriculture Secretary of Pernambuco and is involved in research, development and production of agricultural goods and services (administration, adaptation and transference technology). Its activities also provide technical assistance and rural development to farmers, in addition to the realization of hydro infrastructure projects and the supply of goods and services for sustainable agricultural development.
The IPA is integrated to the National System of Agriculture Research (SNPA), coordinated by the Brazilian Company of Agriculture Research (Embrapa), and has 15 analysis laboratories.
ITEP-OS:
The Institute of Technology of Pernambuco, a non-profit organization, is a regional center of reference in the supply of technological solutions to the productive sector. ITEP provides technological services to public and private sectors and society in the areas of: Civil Construction; Environmental Technology; Food Quality; Gypsum Technology; Industrial Metrology; Geo-processing; Meteorology; and Materials Technology.
The Area of Materials Technology and Civil Construction: supply the demands of the productive sector, such as the industries of the Gypsum Cluster, ceramic industries and metal mechanics.
The Environmental Technology department includes Water Resources, Environmental Quality and Environmental Engineering programs which focus on technological assistance for the implementation of public policy for water resources and environmental quality.
In the area of Foodstuffs Technology, there is a group of excellence in the area of toxic agricultural residues. The infrastructure of the laboratories and the qualification of its researchers make ITEP an important institution in the application of public healthcare policy, sanitary vigilance and exportation assistance.
Technology Centers
Technology Centers (TC) develop Professional Education activities (technical level courses aimed at incentivizing entrepreneurship and technological innovation). The Science, Technology and Environment Secretary of Pernambuco (Sectma) singled out the Technological Institute of Pernambuco (ITEP-OS) for the administration of the centers statewide.
There are already four TCs in operation, focusing on fashion (in Caruaru); Gypsum (in Araripina); goat farming (in Serra Talhada); and Digital Culture (in Olinda). Three more will become operational in 2010: TC for milk derivatives (in Garanhuns); Mechanics of Metals and Plastics (in Recife) and the TC for pharmacy (in Goiana).
Microsoft Etepam Innovation Center:
This center is the result of a Microsoft initiative which is 100% Brazilian, and aims to develop a research environment of robust and self sustainable applied research and technological development involving companies from the public and private sectors, universities and software development companies. In practice, the students at the center gain competence and abilities in specific areas of Information Technology (TI), preparing them for the job market.
The Microsoft Etepam Innovation Center, coordinated by Sectma, is the only one operating in a pubic technical school in Brazil. Professors, students, researchers, market consultants, and liberal professionals work together at the center, exploiting the most advanced technologies and the best practices to create innovative solutions that supply business needs in regional and vertical markets.
Vocational Technical Schools
There are several public and private technical schools in Pernambuco, which offer vocational courses in the most diverse specialties.
Federal Public Technical Schools:
The Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pernambuco (IFPE) has six campuses installed in the municipalities of Recife, Ipojuca, Pesqueira, Barreiros, Vitória de Santo Antão and Belo Jardim and three more in construction (Caruaru, Garanhuns, and Afogados da Ingazeira). The Federal Institute of the Pernambuco Sertão operates from campuses in Petrolina and rural zone Petrolina and Floresta Campus. There are a further two units under construction in the cities of Salgueiro and Ouricuri.
The Dom Agostinho lkas Agricultural school in the municipality of São Lourenço da Mata, is a Technical School linked to the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE).
State Public Technical Schools:
There are 12 Technical Schools located in the cities of Bom Jardim, Timbaúba, Recife (two), Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Escada, Sertânia, Palmares, Carpina, Goiânia, Limoeiro, Surubim and Serra Talhada.
Private Vocational Education
National Business Learning Service (SENAI):
Founded in 1942 by the sector’s business community, SENAI is currently one of the most important nationwide hubs of generation and diffusion of knowledge applied to industrial development. Partially integrated to the National Industry Confederation System (CNI) and the State Industry Federations, it assists the industrial sector by training human resources, providing auxiliary and laboratory services, applied research and information technology. SENAI is the biggest vocational educational complex in Latin America and is the only institution of Professional Training to be awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification.
SENAI Pernambuco is a subordinate of the Pernambuco State Industry Federation (FIEPE) and has the following infrastructure:
- 10 Technical Schools in the municipalities of Recife (three), Paulista, Cabo, Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, Caruaru, Garanhuns, Araripina and Petrolina;
- Over 100 laboratories, with National Institute of Metrology, Normalization and Quality (INMETRO) credentials, which offer applied research services, tests and reports of products and materials in the following areas: foodstuffs, water, textiles (physical and chemical analysis), civil construction, gypsum, microbiology and microscopy.
- 20 technical courses in 262 perfecting courses
National Service of Commercial Learning (Senac):
Founded in 1946 by the National Commerce Federation (CNC), Senac trains and prepares workers for the commerce of goods, services and tourism. It offers three types of learning (full time, distance and part time), in 15 areas (arts, commerce, communication, conservation and caretaking, design, administration, personal image, information technology, leisure and social development, environment, health, educational technology, telecommunications; tourism and hospitality).
Senac Pernambuco:
With Professional Graduation Centers (CFPs) in Recife, Paulista, Vitória, Caruaru, Garanhuns and Petrolina, Senac Pernambuco offers the following courses:
- Vocational courses in the Environment, Healthcare and Safety; Education Assistance; Administration and Business; Hospitality and leisure; Information, Communication, Cultural Production and Design
- Degree course: Administration, Events, Fashion Design, Gastronomy and monitoring
- Post graduation: Specialization in Fashion Production and Styling; Specialization in Business Administration; Specialization in Events Production and Administration
- Language courses: English - 06 levels; Spanish - 04 levels; French - 04 levels; Italian – 02 levels; German – 02 levels; Mandarin – 03 levels, including in company classes.
