The company offers natural gas at competitive prices, contributing to the attraction of new investments to Pernambuco.

Health

Pernambuco is also a national reference in health care. The State ranks second in Brazil in terms of size, quality, modernity and technological advance in the sector. Pernambuco has the second highest index of doctors per capita, and it occupies the third position in research in the medical-hospital-pharmaceutical arena.

The State offers over 3,000 health establishments and almost 22,000 hospital beds, with the expertise of cutting edge health providers (public and private) and renowned research institutions, broad professional knowledge as well as highly innovative industrial establishments in the electric-electronic, medical-hospital, and information technology sectors.

Pernambuco’s heavyweight public institutions in technology research and development reinforce our vocation for and pioneering in health at world-class levels. The Pernambuco State Pharmaceutical Laboratory (Lafepe) maintains partnerships with Cuba, Holland, Africa and Peru, and the Aggeu Magalhães Research Center collaborates with Health and Environment for the World Health Organization (WHO).

Around 72% of homes have land line telephone and 16% have a computer with 11.9% internet coverage. Pernambuco receives transmission signals from eight television channels, is covered by around 80 AM/FM radio stations and three high circulation newspapers in the capital alone. (source: PNAD/IBGE, 2008).

Two private companies offer broadband cable internet: GVT (in the meantime serving Recife and Jaboatão dos Guararapes) and Oi. Wireless, high speed internet is provided by Claro, Oi, Tim and Vivo.

An integrated network for access by governmental organs is offered by Rede PE-Multidigital, which integrates data, voice and video conferencing in speeds varying from 256Kbps to 100Mbps.

PE-Multidigital is an integrated telecommunication and information technology solution, constructed from a backbone of telecommunications, maintaining a main access point (Recife) and access points distributed in strategic locations throughout state territory. The resources and operational services are provided by Consórcio 31 Multidigital PE, made up of Oi (technology access) and Siemens (infrastructure).

Ports

There are two large ports in Pernambuco:

Port of Recife

porto do recife

Port of Recife handles a yearly average of 2.2 million tons of cargo, including sugar, wheat, corn, barley malt, fertilizers, clinker and carbonated soda. The port is located near the main centers of consumption and it serves almost all of the states in the Brazilian Northeast. It has a 2,960 meter-long moveable quay with 16-ships docking capacity, a covered area of 48,500 m² for storage and a 1,000 m² uncovered patio, as well as a cruise-ship passengers terminal.

Suape, a 15,000-hectare Port Zone just 35 km from Recife, moves over 5 million tons of cargo annually and boast external and internal ports with multi-purpose quays, a containers terminal, and a liquid bulk terminal connecting to 160 ports in all continents.

Suape has the potential to become the country’s main port. In a recent study, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) singled out Suape as the best public port in Brazil.

Companies operating in the Industrial Port Complex of Suape enjoy a well-developed infrastructure, including internal roads and train lines, water supply, electric energy, telecommunications and natural gas throughout the complex.

The 683m² Passenger Terminal handles 3,100 passengers per month, is currently undergoing expansion to 1,794m², and offers:

  • Hall, with food court, shops, tourist information desk, bank kiosks, pharmacy, taxis rank, newsstand and souvenirs;

Aerodromes

According to information from the National Agency of Civil Aviation (ANAC), there are also 11 public aerodromes and 11 private aerodromes able to receive light aircraft located in cities throughout Pernambuco.

Surface Transportation

The surface of the State is crossed, from northeast to the south, by 17 federal system highways, such as BR 232 and BR 116, which connect Pernambuco to other states in the Northeast. In total, 41,657 km of highways connect Recife, the state’s capital, to other state cities and the rest of the country.

The State railway is operated by TransNordestina Logistíca and is 1,009 km in extension. The construction of the Trans Northeastern Railway is underway, a world class project which will link the ports of Pecém (Ceará) and Suape to the municipality of Eliseu Martins (Piauí).

Passenger rail transportation in Recife is offered by the Brazilian Urban Trains Company (CBTU). The system has an extension of 53 km with 27 stations, serving 5 municipalities. Using the Integrated Structural System (SEI) of public transport in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, passengers pay just one fare for combined bus and Metro trips, benefitting the labor force and relieving employers of the cost of fares.

The São Francisco River has a short navigable stretch in Pernambuco, which is planned to become Petrolina/Juazeiro’s intermodal road/rail/waterway terminal.
